The terroir
Located on the Right Bank of La Dordogne, in the heart of one of Bordeaux's most renowned wine regions, the jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion became, in 1999, the first vineyard in the world to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as a "cultural landscape"—a distinction that honours both its medieval town and its wine landscapes shaped by centuries of tradition.
The medieval town developed on a vast limestone plateau, where quarries were carved out for its construction. They left nearly 200 km of underground galleries, now used for ageing wines, and house the impressive monolithic church, carved entirely from a single block of limestone, one of the largest underground churches in Europe.
Its exceptional terroir relies on cool soils composed of lumachelle limestone, clay-limestone and deep clay, which are particularly well-suited for the thriving of Merlot. It is primarily home to traditional, family-run estates, where winemaking traditions are passed down from generation to generation.
Blending historical heritage, timeless charm and renowned wines, Saint-Émilion stands out as an essential destination, drawing over a million visitors every year.
