La Dordogne
The terroir
In the heart of the Périgord Noir, Sarlat-la-Canéda stands out as one of the finest medieval towns in France. A true architectural gem, its historic centre enchants visitors with its cobbled streets, golden-stone facades, intimate squares and remarkable medieval and Renaissance heritage. A town of timeless charm, where every street bears witness to centuries of history.
Between limestone cliffs, picturesque villages and medieval fortresses, the Dordogne valley offers landscapes emblematic of the South-West. Depending on the season, a cruise in a traditional gabarre allows you to rediscover the river as it was in bygone days, when these flat-bottomed boats were used to transport goods.
Perched on its rocky spur, Beynac-et-Cazenac overlooks the valley and ranks among the most beautiful villages in the Périgord. Its remarkably well-preserved medieval château played a strategic role during the Hundred Years' War. From its heights, it offers an exceptional panorama over the Dordogne valley.
Further on, in the Vézère valley, Lascaux reveals one of the greatest masterpieces of prehistoric cave art in the world, discovered in 1940 and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. The original cave houses hundreds of paintings and engravings created nearly 17 000 years ago; now preserved, it can be explored through Lascaux IV, a remarkably faithful and immersive reproduction.
Between heritage, landscapes, history and gastronomy, the Périgord Noir offers an immersion into the heart of an exceptional region.
