Cognac
The terroir
The birthplace of Francis I, Cognac stretches across both banks of the Charente river, in the heart of an exceptional wine region. Thanks to its temperate oceanic climate and iconic grape variety, Ugni Blanc, the region has spent centuries producing an eau-de-vie globally renowned for its finesse, aromatic richness and maturation in oak barrels. The medieval town captivates spirits and gastronomy enthusiasts just as much as lovers of cultural heritage and picturesque sites.
The 17th century saw the birth of the first trading houses, driven by Dutch, British and Scandinavian merchants who played a major role in the development of trade and distillation. The 19th century then marked the beginning of its international rise.
Crafted according to the traditional double distillation method in Charentais stills, it also owes its renown to major houses such as Martell, Hennessy, Rémy Martin, Delamain and Hine, which today open their doors to unveil the secrets of its production, from vine to bottle.
A visit to a cooperage can round off this immersion and reveal an age-old craft, the true guardian of tradition.
Between spirits, gastronomy and heritage, Cognac offers an essential Charentais escape in the capital of eaux-de-vie.
