Médoc
The terroir
The Médoc is a vast region, bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the east by the Gironde estuary. Its name originates from the Latin "in medio aquae", meaning "in the middle of waters". To the south of this peninsula, the Landes forest contributes to the richness of its landscapes, its biodiversity and its varied micro-climate.
The youngest of the Bordeaux wine regions and undoubtedly the most famous worldwide, the Médoc owes its renown to an exceptional terroir shaped by the famous Garonne gravel, its temperate oceanic climate and the expertise of its winemakers. The peninsula is home to the prestigious Grands Crus Classés of 1855, a classification established at the request of Napoleon III during the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
The Route des Châteaux allows you to discover this exceptional terroir through vineyards, forests and picturesque villages. Cabernet Sauvignon expresses its full potential on these warm, gravelly soils, giving rise to wines that rank among the most iconic of Bordeaux.
The Médoc remains an essential stop for wine lovers during a stay in Bordeaux.
